Bottom-Release vs. Spout-Style Fat Separators for Gravy

A fat separator gives settled pan drippings a controlled way to leave the fat behind. The practical choice is whether you prefer draining from the bottom or pouring through a low spout. Both selected OXO products are four-cup models, but their handling and cleaning differ.

Let separation happen before dispensing
Strain unwanted bits and allow the layers to settle. The tool does not make fat disappear or instantly produce finished gravy. Avoid overfilling and handle hot liquid carefully. Keep a stable receiving vessel ready before operating a release trigger or lifting a filled jug.

Bottom release changes the motion
The Good Gravy model 11198900 dispenses through a bottom drain controlled by its handle, with a silicone shut-off valve. This can reduce the need to tip a filled container. It also gives you a valve and external drain to clean and inspect rather than a plain jug alone.
The spout version needs its stopper
The conventional OXO four-cup separator uses a stopper and strainer. Follow the manufacturer’s filling and pouring sequence; the stopper is functional, not packaging to discard. Stop pouring as the fat layer approaches the outlet rather than emptying the jug simply to avoid waste.
Choose by the motion you can manage
Consider grip, filled weight, receiving-pan height and cleanup. Neither product has been tested by this project for accessibility or separation efficiency. If either motion is awkward, smaller controlled batches may be preferable to handling a full hot container.

Treat capacity as a working limit
Four cups is a nominal capacity, not a reason to fill to the edge with steaming drippings. Leave appropriate headroom and follow use directions. Gravy preparation still needs its own source-qualified recipe; this comparison does not invent a thickening ratio or a low-fat nutrition claim.
